Hotel History

Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas was the first Hyatt hotel to be opened in Abu Dhabi, and over the years the resort has been the recipient of a host of prestigious awards and accolades.

Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas offers guests the feeling of a serene island retreat away from the bustle of the city. The design has been created in such a way as to give the guest a residential, comfortable and resort-like feel, making them feel instantly at home.

The hotel has been built as a low-rise building in order not to overpower the natural surroundings of the island. The design of the hotel links various natural elements (sand, wind, water, desert and sea) and connects them in such way that they complement the space.

The colour schemes create a harmonious, serene destination that is light, open, airy and comfortable. The hotel has several water features that provide a refreshing and breezy courtyard feeling. Reflecting pools serve not only as landscape features, but also as cooling elements; as prevailing winds cross the water and blow towards the main building and the restaurant terraces. A mix of dark and light blue tiles was used to enhance the colour of the water and create the resort’s cooling feeling. The resort setting was created in such a way that the architecture and landscape complement each other in every way, to create an environment where the lines between indoors and outdoors are almost invisible.

Located on the prestigious natural island of Saadiyat, along an 8 km (5 mile) stretch of environmentally protected white sandy beach, Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas is a stylish contemporary resort, offering spectacular unobstructed views of the waterfront and Saadiyat Beach Golf Club. Given the palatial size of the hotel, the design team was challenged to create an intimate, residential environment that still adhered to the highest standards of luxury.

Design started in 2007 when Saadiyat Island was still a vision, with New York-based Perkins Eastman appointed as architects in addition to Singapore-based Wilson Associates; the hotel’s interior designers. The design team had previously worked on other projects for Hyatt hotels around the world, such as Grand Hyatt Shenzen and Park Hyatt Dubai. Ten people were on the design team for Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi.

The designers’ brief was to create an urban resort concept for Saadiyat Island which reflected the arts and culture of the Middle East. Being a Park Hyatt hotel, the designers created an intimate yet sophisticated residential feel with a smaller number of rooms, specifically to ensure a level of service that pays close attention to detail. The brief was based on Park Hyatt being the first hotel on the island.

The design has been created in such a way as to give the guest a residential, comfortable and resort-like feel, making them feel instantly at home. The furniture and décor of the public areas, restaurants and spa have been created to reflect the elements of water and the desert, such as driftwood being used in the Beach House restaurant. It also features elements shaped like sand waves in the hotel lobby as well as a water-drop chandelier in the spa.

Park Hyatt is committed to maintaining the highest standards of green and environmentally friendly practices, in both the hotel’s development and sustainability. The hotel is currently working towards its LEED silver certification, which verifies that a building is designed and built using strategies intended to improve performance in metrics such as energy saving, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, stewardship of resources and sensitivity to the hotel’s impact.

Over 50% of the landscaped area is designed to reflect a dry wadi and therefore reduces the need for irrigation. The remaining area is a mixture of turfed lawn and natural grass, as well as native planting which requires minimal watering, and is able to withstand the region’s harsh climate during the summer.
